Starting a movement

It is time to start a movement. 40 years after the Stonewall Riots and we have made very little progress. While we do have organizations like GLADD, they have done almost nothing for the Homosexual community. They hold balls, not protests. They have awards, not riots. They take on 'tiny battles.' Such as anti gay ads in a small Utah newspaper. This WILL NOT win the war for Equal Rights. They spend an outrageous amount of money to host lavish events that have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to make gay marriage happen. The next 'event' is coming to my hometown. Here is the description from the GLADD website:

"The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), host Braden Powers and event chair Cordey Lash invite you to join us on the red carpet as GLAAD brings Hollywood to Dallas for one night only!

GLAAD Dallas – Lights, Camera Action! will be an enchanting evening with celebrity guests, delicious food, great music, and hosted cocktails celebrating the work and accomplishments of GLAAD’s Entertainment Media Program and highlighting the work of a local Dallas media outlet that has championed the cause to include fair and accurate portrayals of LGBT people to change hearts and minds! Guests will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction, receive gift bags, take exclusive photos with our celebrity guests, and enter into a raffle to win your very own Hollywood experience!"

"Accurate portrayals?" I understand that it is impotent to have a good face out there but let's be honest. There is none! Queer as folk? An embarrassment to the gay people. An hour of reinforced stereotypes, debauchery, drug use and pointless dialog. While it maybe be an accurate view of SOME of the gay community it is vital that we show our best side to the world. If you had to show someone with now idea of the gay community, is that what you want them to see? We must show that we are not all cocaine using, sexually promiscuous, limp wrist ed, squealing faeries. That we don't all worship attractive male celebrities and think only about going to the gym to work out. We are portrayed in the media as the most superficial group of people, only caring about looks. Even our own publications are laced with pictures of half naked men, models, and only the best looking of the gay community. This is not only damaging to out public appearance, it hurts people inside of our 'group.' Saying that 'this is what a gay man looks like' tells young men that not looking like this means that you will not be accepted and can't get a boyfriend. It's not much different from what young girls face today with the portrayal of women in magazines and television.

This is a call to action for everyone in the gay community. Blogging will not make change. I encourage everyone to get creative and get out there! Take on the nation, not your local newspaper. Make the news. Show our country that we are not a minority. We are someone everyone knows. Fathers, brothers, sons, neighbors, co-workers, and best friends. I will post my thoughts and opinions. I will be honest and I know it will upset a lot of people but it's what I feel needs to be done.

That's all for now. Thank you for reading.
